Cambodian Mushroom History
First discovered in Southeast Asia, Cambodian mushrooms belong to the Psilocybe cubensis family. The original mushroom strain was found near an ancient Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Legendary mycologist John Allen (Mushroom John) collected and cultivated the original spore and brought it to North America in the 90’s. Since then, Cambodian mushrooms have become one of the best mushroom strains for psychonauts and growers worldwide.
However, local legend suggests that Cambodian magic mushrooms were used long before Mushroom John “discovered” them. Tribal cultures and religious leaders may have consumed ancestor strains of the Cambodian strain in the 1100s following the construction of the temple.
Cambodian Cubensis Appearance
Cambodian magic mushrooms have a conical or wide bell-shaped cap with a golden brown or copper colour. Sometimes a gradient effect from dark to light can be seen towards the edge of the caps. When it comes to the stems, they’re typically medium to large in size. However, dried mushrooms will have noticeable changes to both shape and size.
If you notice light or dark blue spots on your Cambodian shrooms, don’t worry–that’s completely normal. Those are natural bruises that occur when psilocybin mushrooms are exposed to oxygen during harvest, transportation, or storage. The bruising does not pose any health risks.
Magic Mushroom Benefits
Magic mushrooms contain psilocybin, which can cause mild to severe hallucinogenic effects. Aside from getting you high, they may also have mental and physical health benefits. Research shows psilocybin can have a positive effect on
- Anxiety
- Alcohol and drug dependency
- Depression
- Headaches
- PTSD
- Stress levels
It’s important to remember that shrooms are not a magical cure-all. Magic mushrooms can address certain issues, but should not be used to improperly self-medicate. More research is still needed to understand the long-term therapeutic effects of psychedelic mushrooms.
Cambodian Mushroom Effects
Cambodian cubensis has a potency that is considered above average compared to other popular mushroom strains. Magic mushrooms typically take effect within 30 to 45 minutes and can last anywhere between 3 to 6 hours depending on the shroom dosage. Initial effects may include nausea and yawning, a sign that the “trip” will begin.

Cambodian Mushroom Recommendations
Magic mushrooms can be fun and trippy, with every experience being different each time. Knowing what you’re getting into with psychedelics makes all the difference in how your trip will unfold. Whether it’s your first or tenth time taking shrooms, understanding the safety precautions and risks can help you prepare for a magical trip.
Don’t take Cambodian mushrooms alone; always have a trip sitter or sober person present in case you experience a bad trip. Understand your set (mindset) and setting (environment). Choose a familiar or comfortable environment where you feel safe and relaxed and only take Cambodian shrooms when you’re in a good mindset. You’ll need at least 6-8 hours of the day to fully immerse yourself in your mushroom journey, so plan your day beforehand.
