The history of Penis Envy (PE) mushrooms is every bit exciting as it is a mystery. But, there are a couple of stories out there with little to no evidence to support the facts.

Some say the original sample of Penis Envy was first discovered in the early 1970s by an ethnobotanist named Terence McKenna while on a trip to the Colombian Amazon. However, some believe the sample he collected growing in Zebu cattle dung was actually the Amazonian mushroom. Regardless, he brought back the spore print to the United States.

Another story suggests that a spore print from McKenna’s collection ended up in the hands of Steve Pollock, a well-known mycologist. Over the years, Pollock isolated and cultured only the strongest genetics from the strain until he developed Penis Envy. Sadly, Pollock was murdered in 1981 in what appeared to be mysterious circumstances.

After Pollock’s death, a sample of the Penis Envy mushroom strain found its way to Rich Gee (Richard Guitierrez), a mycologist in Washington. Rich Gee was able to clone the mushroom and eventually sent out the spores to growers in the US.

Following this, it comes as no surprise that the strain’s popularity began to grow. Containing more psilocybin than most, Penis Envy is one of the strongest shroom strains out of the P. cubensis varieties. And they’re hard to forget once you try them.

Penis Envy Appearance

Coming in all shapes and sizes, Penis Envy has a distinctly phallic shape that’s hard to miss. Its thick, bulbous light to dark brown cap and short stem give off the appearance of a circumcised penis.

Another colour you may notice on PE shrooms is light to dark blue spots. This is called “bruising” and it’s completely normal in psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Psilocybin naturally reacts to oxygen and turns blue during harvest, storage, or transport.
